AMR31003   Design of composites   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2021/2022
Credit level: F6

Description

This module will introduce students to the design process of composite materials. Applications of composites will be reviewed using authentic examples from industry. Analytical and computational design tools will be introduced allowing students to understand the mechanical response of laminae and laminates. Design for manufacture will be used to explore appropriate techniques for the construction of composite lay-ups, including assessing the economic viability of such methods. Life cycle analysis will allow students to consider the sustainable and social impact of composite materials. Failure of composites will be investigated, including the use of non-destructive testing methods and of sensors for condition monitoring and repair.
